GL volunteers meet with President of Costa Rica!
In recognition of Global Learning’s years of positive and worthwhile work in Costa Rican schools, Global Learning volunteers were honored guests at the inauguration of a new high school in the community of Guardia on July 25, 2006. The opening of the new
school was a huge day for students, who had been learning in an inadequate barn-like building with plywood dividers separating classrooms. GL volunteers, who have worked with Guardia elementary and high school students since 2000, were grateful to be able to share the special day with students and community members.
Costa Rican President and Noble Peace Prize Laureate Oscar Arias Sanchez was the keynote speaker at the school’s inauguration. After the ceremony, he made a special effort to meet with Global Learning Director Jana Kiser to learn more about the organization and the good work GL volunteers do. Jana and other volunteers had the pleasure of meeting with the Costa Rican Minister of Education before the ceremony.
